Brooklyn based Caroline’s Donuts recently opened up a spot in the Upper East Side, and I hope this sweet spot is here to stay. It took over where Polletto Chicken used to be, and PQR before that. The owners of Caroline’s Donuts, Thierry Locatelli and Caroline Lameda, also live in the upper east side, so fingers crossed it’ll be here for a long time, because I don’t really want to trek to Brooklyn every time I’m craving a DoughCro!
Speaking of which, the most popular item at Caroline’s is the DoughCro indeed. It’s a donut-croissant hybrid, just like the Cronut, but not. The owners say it was inspired by the Cronut, but it’s not identical. In fact, in my opinion, having had Dominique Ansel’s famous Cronut, I would say the DoughCro is actually better! It’s lighter, less chewy, not as dense, and for whatever reason, I don’t feel as guilty in the waistline after finishing it (although that could totally be mental, but let’s not digress). It’s dusted in sugar, but it’s not overly “sweet” like your typical sugar dusted donut.
I wanted the DoughCro with the whipped cream and strawberry on top, but they were already sold out of it at 10:30am, so I had to settle for the sugar DoughCro. They also have two cream cheese options (blueberry & orange), several glazed flavors (too many to list), and four filled options (Cream Brûlée, Nutella, Boston Cream and Strawberry). The Nutella was not available when I was there, so yet another reason to have to go back… and go back I shall.
The Selection…
The famous DoughCro
*Wow this was amazing. Granted I had to wait 9 minutes for it, because they were sold out, and making more. I ended up only waiting 4 minutes for it, but I would have waited 15… it was worth the wait. So good, freshly warm… yum and yum!
Creme Brûlée
*if you like creme brûlée, highly recommend this one too. Not too sweet, and a true hard crusted caramelized sugar coating on top. Cream was not too sweet, and you can even see the specks of fresh vanilla beans that were used.
Blueberry Cream Cheese
*I’m not usually a cream cheese type person, but this one was very good. Not too strong on the cream cheese, and the blueberry balances it out nicely. Like their other donuts, also not too sweet like the typical cream cheese frosting ones.
Boston Creme
Coconut Glazed
Chocolate Glazed
Line out the door… frequently, but moves fairly fast.
Today’s damage… tomorrow is another day. Still need to try the Nutella filled, and the DoughCro with whipped cream!
