City: San Miniato, Italy. Truffle in Tuscany
1 truffle hunting dog.
60 minutes in the hills of San Miniato.
3 black truffles.
Doesn’t get any fresher than that.
If you love truffles, and you want to work a little for that indulgence, then go on a truffle hunt in Tuscany! We went with Massimo to the forest, with his trusty dog Méla, a special breed of dog trained to sniff out the truffles. I have a new found appreciation for the high premium price on truffles after wandering around the forest in sweltering hot heat, only for a chance to hopefully find a truffle or two. May have to sweat a little, and don’t forget your bug spray, but if you go prepared, it’s definitely a do worthy, once in a lifetime experience.
Meet Melá (aka apple in Italian), our expert truffle hunting dog. She is trained to sniff out the truffles, which give out an aroma once they are ripe. Once she catches a scent, she lets Massimo know, and he carefully checks and digs around the dirt to see if there is indeed a truffle there.
Mela found truffle #1!
Good job Melá!! Lots of pets! Found truffle #2!
Score… truffle #3! The biggest of the ones we found. Time to head back to eat them!
*So simple. So good. Truffles really shine.
Truffles in Tuscany with Massimo and his dad.
Cheese ravioli, crushed hazelnut, thyme, butter, olive oil, truffles.
*Massimo’s sister made the raviolis. So good
*fresh eggs from Massimo’s hen house, simply prepared with olive oil, salt and shaved truffles.
Just perfecto 😋 Truffle in Tuscany
*At current market prices, they would sell to brokers/restaurants for 1000€ per kilo for black truffles, and 8000€ per kilo for white truffles. Luckily now we have our own personal direct truffle source. Looking forward to ordering from you direct next season!
