HOTEL STAY
City: Roxbury, NY | Catskills & Hudson Valley. 2258 County Highway 41, Roxbury, NY 12474
DO WORTHY | REVIEW | NY/NJ/PA
Just about 3 hours drive north of New york City, in the Catskills, The Roxbury at Stratton Falls is about the quirkiest and unique hotel property we have ever seen or stayed in. You won’t be able to miss them. Just look for the fairy-tale-like black and white castles. The eye grabbing neon green will catch your attention the moment you arrive. Each room at the The Roxbury Motel has their own theme. With so many options, you are bound to find a few that will catch your interest. Everything from the Genie’s Bottle, the Wizard of Oz, to an Archaeologist’s Dig’s or the Final Frontier, there is definitely something for everyone.
The second property The Roxbury at Stratton Falls, is the newer edition of the two, and is made up of a series of themed cottages. We stayed at the Faerie Forest, the newest one to join the ranks. It was a magical retreat, away from reality, if only for a brief weekend before we are thrust back to reality.
There is a beautiful onsite pool, and also a spa. Just a short hike away is the famous Stratton Falls where lots of weddings take place. There are also lots of local eats nearby. If you’re looking for a fun weekend in the Catskills, a stay at the Roxbury, with it’s two endearing owners, will not disappoint. It is truly a DO WORTHY experience, at least once.

Faerie Forest Cottage Entrance
The inspiration for the interiors of this cottage was drawn from using what one sees along their journey to the Stratton Falls waterfall nearby. The challenge for the Faerie Forest Cottage was bringing the outside into a livable inside. For the main living areas and hallways we did not want any smooth surfaces. No walls that scream drywall and very little artwork that is not three-dimensional.
The goal for the Faerie Forest was to transport the guest into the realm of an enchanted forest. From the moment they cross the entry door threshold in this Roxbury cottage, they themselves become, well – a faerie. And with hundreds of twinkling lights, they are introduced to their other long lost family and friends of the fae.
Faerie Forest – Hallway to the Living Room
Follow the blue sparkly tiled floor, leading you like a stream to the living room. Common living area with sleeper sofa increasing possible total occupancy to six. This area also has its own door into the downstairs bathroom. This enables guests in the downstairs bedroom and living area to have separate private entrances to the downstairs bathroom. It also has a screened-in back-porch off downstairs living area with outdoor dining tables.
Faerie Forest – Up the Stairs to Bedroom #1
The stairs lead you up to the bedroom upstairs and a bathroom, complete with a Juliette balcony. The whimsical bespoke staircase is made entirely from cedar trees, procured from a dead grove discovered on a mountain not far from The Roxbury.
Faerie Forest – Bedroom #1
Features a queen bed, each with their own privately-accessed bathroom. One bathroom with a tub and shower and one bathroom with a large walk-in shower.
Faerie Forest – Juliet Balcony
The Faerie Forest is the only cottage that has both a small balcony on the front of the building accessed from the upstairs bedroom as well as an interior “Juliet balcony” on the second floor where guests can enjoy the higher elevations of the forest.
Faerie Forest – Bedroom #2
This bedroom is located downstairs on the ground floor.
A Faerie Forest Bathroom
Faerie Forest Cottage + Cinderella’s Gown
Each duplex building typically shares two themed cottages, each with their own entrance. Click on each cottage name to see more.
Cinderella’s Gown – If we had the ability, we would give you a fairy godmother during your stay who would wave a wand and magically adorn you in a resplendent outfit. But because we can’t do that, we came up with the idea to give you a cottage with other features to help you live the fairy tale.
Thus, there are two of them that we call the “crown jewels” in this cottage experience: 1) an enormous 18′ ball gown that serves as the bed canopy for the downstairs bedroom and, 2) an enormous pumpkin morphing into a golden carriage that serves as the entire bathroom in the upstairs bedroom.
The Superhero Incognito
The Superhero Incognito – Let’s face it, superheros need their space too. All of that time spent saving humanity can be exhausting. Your hands start to go numb from signing autographs. Your mouth starts to ache from smiling so much for all the group selfie requests. Our superhero asked us if we could build her a weekend cottage not far from the world’s greatest metropolis. And we did, we built a cottage where she could remain incognito for a few days and get some rest.
Oh, and she needed a place to park her invisible plane… After we discovered that Roy Lichtenstein was her favorite artist, the design of the cottage fell into place quite easily.
The Lost Horizon
The Lost Horizon – This cottage is all about making guests feel as if they have jumped into the silver screen. Thus, transplanted into a glamorous Hollywood grand art deco Manhattan apartment. As a result, the design scheme of this Roxbury cottage is all tones of black and white and silver.
One of our favorite films is the Capra film “Lost Horizon” inspired by the famous James Hilton novel about a utopian land called Shangri La. Not only did the film boast one of the most expensive sets in Hollywood history – all art deco – it also has a famous scene where the lead character discovers his love interest in a pastoral mountainous waterfall setting.
Terrazza of the Titans
Terraza of the Titans – It is difficult to do justice to the brilliant michelangelesque mural created for this cottage by Wish Unlimited. The mural depicts warring factions of Greek Gods to transport you into a realm of classicism.
This is the only cottage with an interior hallway leading to a second door onto the lower level screened-in porch. The real inspiration for this cottage is our fascination with the original 1981 film Clash of the Titans. Many elements of the film served as the inspiration for its artwork and decor. We want you to feel your supernatural powers while staying in this Roxbury cottage. We want you to feel, well, like a God.
Galileo’s Gate
Galileo’s Gate – Ancient Astronaut Theorists hypothesize that some of the greatest human minds were perhaps influenced by visits from beings from other planets. Was Galileo Galilei one of those people?
We will never know. But as you can tell, we’re sci fi nerds who love to watch the History Channel. And the idea gave us the inspiration for creating a multi-dimensional design experience. An experience where you go from Renaissance on the first level to a towering spiral staircase. Then through an illuminated portal and into an alien galaxy on the second level. Then back up the spiral staircase into an octagonal stargazing glass observation deck (complete with telescope). All the while guarded on high by statues of the four alien “teachers” of Galileo.
Dracula’s Fangs
Dracula’s Fangs – This cottage at The Roxbury is fiendishly fabulous in an elegant yet subtly sinister kind of way. When you rent this cottage, you should be waiting at the top of the grand staircase to greet your guests. With outstretched arms you should say: “I am…. Dracula… Welcome to my home.”
Then, allow your guests to come greet you at the enormous carved mahogany chair and kiss your vampire ring. Okay, enough of the fantasy, but hopefully you get the point. This cottage is inspired by the groin vault scenes in the Bela Lugosi Dracula classic. A film that must have influenced so many other art directors of vampire films. We wanted this bedroom experience to be the ultimate in sinister gothic elegance. So we decked it out with brass wall railings and cushioned walls. Finishing touches of course must include red velvet blackout curtains. Let’s just say Dracula has tricked you into sleeping in his, well, coffin…
Crown of the Pendragons
Crown of the Pendragons – The name “Pendragon” comes from the Welsh pen “head or chief” and the latin draco “dragons.” So the name literally means “Chief-Dragon” or “Head-Dragon.” And that is EXACTLY the way we want you to feel when you stay in this cottage. We built one of the most extravagant bathrooms in the world. A bathroom to help you fulfill your innermost king, queen, royal, or CHIEF DRAGON fantasy.
It’s a bathroom with an 85-gallon circular bathtub right in the center of the room. A three-tiered 20’ high crown chandelier hanging above it. Plus, an elevated area behind the tub with two massive throne chairs. Don’t forget the two luxurious chaise lounges for resting in front of the 60” television. Not to mention, a secret showering chamber with multiple body sprays that lies hidden behind ancient golden druid sculptures. This is a bathroom, fit for, well, a king. A queen. You.
